This summer, a 15-year-old sophomore from South Lake High School is investing two afternoons each week to tutor children at New Beginnings’ offices.
“I like doing stuff for other people, especially kids,” says Tori.
Her mother says Tori’s benevolence is not new. Twice, the young woman has asked for financial donations for animal shelters instead of birthday gifts.
Tori learned that 7 children, between the ages of 6 and 12, needed help in school. Their parents are either clients or employees of New Beginnings.
“I decided to try tutoring,” she says. “I can help them and not draw attention to the problems going on.”
Tori creates lesson plans that cover the wide scope of learning and ability. Recently, the kids gave “animal reports,” which included modeling their animal of choice from multi-colored clay.
She also lead the students in creating a model of the solar system. Each person painted one of the planets on Styrofoam balls and then they assembled them together into one model.
