House Manager Knows Both Poverty & Hope
New Beginnings house manager, Ramon, knows the pain and alienation of poverty firsthand. Applying this credibility, he provides care for clients, helping them follow rules and protocols within the program.
Ramon and his family live on the property of the men and women’s residences, offering friendship, accountability, and even the occasional haircut to clients.
Your donation to New Beginnings allows care for our residents 24 hours a day as they recover from homelessness and move toward independence.
His Past Helps Him Relate
As a young adult, Ramon could not read — the third generation in his family. “I taught myself how to type, read and write.”
Many struggles of our residents are familiar to Ramon. “I sold drugs up until I was 19, when I gave my life to Christ,” he says, his ready smile disappearing from his face. “The things I did, I wasn’t really proud of.”
Life radically changed for Ramon, launching him from poverty into the corporate world.
Executive Training and Married to a Nurse
“I was an executive for Target and did Loss Prevention. Having 75 on staff, inspiring them to do things they didn’t always want to do — that training helped me to communicate better, and to determine if someone is being honest with me.”
His wife, Melanie, is also well-equipped to help our residents. “Nurses are the best people ever,” he gushes. “She is so patient and loving and kind.”
His favorite part of being house manager? “Encouraging people,” Ramon says. “Seeing people recover, turning their lives around. There’s nothing like it. I can’t put words to how fulfilled I feel when I see that.”
Motivated by His Faith
“The main reason I do my job is my relationship with Christ. He is 100% the reason why I do this,” says Ramon. “I don’t care what your background is. If you’ve got Jesus, Jesus will be there for you.”
