September is the time of year I think “back to school” but for clients of New Beginnings, every day is back to school.
All year round, we offer 14 weeks of classes, Monday to Friday. That means each formerly homeless client must become a student again; they will study and write and think and ask questions for an average of 54 hours per month.
In addition to being practical, the classes are taught by you, the experts—a former recruiter teaches resume writing, a pastoral counselor teaches vital truth about forgiveness and prayer, an expert teaches plant-based cooking on a budget (in photo). When the classes turn to the subject of addiction prevention, speakers who have triumphed over addictive pasts inspire our clients with their stories of hope.
Several secrets contribute to New Beginnings’ success, and community engagement is a huge factor. Our classes are practical, yes, and the clients are courageous and committed—those conditions alone make for a powerhouse learning environment. But this is huge: as they enter the classroom each weekday, the men and women in our program discover quickly that Central Florida is cheering for them to change. They discover that they are not alone, they matter, they are loved.
Thank you for firmly delivering that message!
We are all students in life; there is always something to learn. And one thing no one can ever take away from you is education.
